Diane Hampton

Stage III Endometrial Cancer
Co-Founder, Breast Cancer Project

Diane Hampton is a breast cancer advocate who fights to bring awareness and resources to the St. Croix community. She is the Project Co-Founder/Project Director of Breast Cancer Project in St. Croix, which hosts events for breast cancer patients and survivors.

“I was diagnosed with stage III endometrial at the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic. I was very anxious, because just six months prior, I lost a very good friend to ovarian cancer. Because treatment was not available on island, I travelled to the mainland for care. Some of my many concerns were health insurance coverage at John Hopkins Hospital and the financial burden that cancer brings. As an advocate, I had supported too many battling the disease.”

With that experience, Diane had made up her mind and said “I was going to win over cancer no matter what type of cancer I had.  I knew that it was an opportunity for me to step up my over 8 years of being a breast cancer advocate to another level by starting to advocate for myself first, and to find a way to help other cancer survivors to find the resources needed to move forward as cancer survivors.”

“I was going to win over cancer no matter what type of cancer I had. I knew that it was an opportunity for me to step up my over 8 years of being a breast cancer advocate to another level by starting to advocate for myself first.”

Grateful to be a CSVI grantee recipient, Diane used the funds received to assist with her travel and living expenses. “The financial resources came immediately from CSVI in addition to sincere words of encouragement from Anique and Barbara. I knew that I was not alone on this journey. I knew that it was going to be difficult financially, especially as a senior citizen living on a fixed income. I’ve known about Cancer Support VI for over 10 years when Charlene Kehoe was the voice on the other end of an outreach call that I made. I continued referring other breast cancer patients in St. Croix.

Cancer Support VI is now more than ever, a necessary and valuable resource for the cancer patients and their families. Cancer is a costly experience that impacts the cancer patient and the entire family both emotionally, and especially financially. CSVI is doing what it does best and that is to educate and serve the people in the community whose lives have been impacted by cancer. What they do in their fundraising campaigns is amazing. Not only are they working hard to raise money, but they are reaching out to the VI community about the seriousness of the impact cancer has on the entire community and the value of working together for the same victory: to win over cancer.”
