Receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2020 adds yet another obstacle to an already challenging year.
Here is one patient’s story of her experience with battling Uterine cancer during COVID and her gratitude for support.
“I was diagnosed with Endometrial (Uterine) cancer in February of this year. The doctor informed me of some abnormalities and I had to seek further treatment.
Before my diagnosis, I was self-employed and enjoying my island lifestyle. My children are adults, so I did not have that responsibility. Since the diagnosis, I am not working and my income has been reduced to Social Security payments. In addition, due to Covid-19, I have been extra careful with my surroundings due to being high risk. In all things, I am still grateful because my children are taking care of me.
Because of the pandemic, things were changing and I was concerned about being able to have treatment. I am very grateful that I was able to have surgery and receive treatment. In addition, cancer treatment is very expensive. Even with insurance, the bills add up quickly. I am so thankful for organizations like Cancer Support VI. They provide financial support, especially when finances change so quickly due to a cancer diagnosis. Once we were in contact with Anique, it was a very smooth process. The application is very simple to complete and the financial support arrived quickly. We were also provided with additional contact information for other support resources.
Cancer may rear its ugly head at any time. You are never prepared for a diagnosis. However, when you know that you are not alone, it makes the process easier. I am grateful for my family, but there are so many others who are going through this process alone. Anique was a breath of fresh air. She is genuine and truly cares about the patients. With the resources at Cancer Support VI, they are trying to make a true difference in the lives of those facing this disease. They provide not only financial support, but also provide information and other contacts who can provide additional support. This includes much needed emotional support. Thank you for the hard work and genuine effort felt during this process and I hope one day to pay it forward! “
